Research on Westmeath Brabazons by Jan Barnes
Dear All, I just found this in my notes on William who married Elinor Naghten & Elizaveth Moore."Gent of Athlone Roscommon Naghten country is the woodlands between Ballinasloe and Roscommon and Beagh Naghten is next to Beagh.
Brabazon Will dated
21 Jan 1768 - proved 12 August 1768.in his will directs that he shall be buried
in the family burial place at Creagh Co. Roscommon with his father, mother and
brother Anthony of Beach.
Will is recorded in Four Courts, Dublin The William Brabazon of Athlone whose will was proved in 1768 was married to another when he died - Elinor Naghten, are they the same William?"
Re: William Brabazon who married Eliza Moore in 1742, ancestor of Brabazons of Westmeath.
One story says that he was a son of Anthony Brabazon, the High Sheriff of Galway who married Margaret Malone (but they seem to have had no children).
Shauna, you have him recorded as the son of Edward Brabazon of Birchgrove and Rose Daton, which is feasible because William (who married Elinor Naughten in 1757) could have married Eliza Moore first and had a son called Robert.... but?
Just to put the cat among the pigeons so to speak, I have another suggestion, but please just file it away somewhere for future reference because it is only a thought.
LDS computer says there was a William Brabazon who married Elizabeth Moore in Loughgilly Co Armagh on 16 July 1733. But I was looking at an LDS film of Prerogative Marriage Licences recently and the abstracts all say the licence was taken out on 11 July 1742 so I think the date of the marriage should be 16 July 1742. Elizabeth was written Elizth. I wonder if this was the couple that were named as the ancestors of the Westmeath Brabazons. The names and the date all match.
The marriage licence said William Brabazon lived in Carlingford, Co Louth, which would probably make him a member of the Louth branch of the Brabazons, not the Roscommon branch.
William Brabazon of Rath Co Louth who died in 1714 left a lot of properties to his sons and daughters and also to a nephew called William Brabazon. The properties included a tenement in Carlingford. I donít know the parents of this William but there is a Henry on the tree who married twice with no descendants recorded.
This William would be a grandson of Captain James Brabazon and Alice Bates and a great grandson of Sir Anthony Brabazon and Margaret Hovendon, (another Anthony and Margaret) but this Anthony Brabazon was brother of the 1st Earl of Meath.
The will of William Brabazon of Rath is in
the Registry of Deeds so it
would probably be worth consulting.
Elizabeth Moore was the third daughter of
John Moore of Drumbanagher Co Armagh and his wife Catherine Savage. John Moore
